Ka-Ping Yee: Building Reliable Voting Machine Software ['I examine the question of how to design election-related software, with particular attention to the threat of insider attacks, and propose the goal of simplifying the software in electronic voting machines. I apply a technique called prerendering to reduce the security-critical, voting-specific software by a factor of 10 to 100 while supporting similar or better usability and accessibility, compared to today's voting machines. Smaller and simpler software generally contributes to easier verification and higher confidence. I demonstrate and validate the prerendering approach by presenting Pvote, a vote-entry program that allows a high degree of freedom in the design of the user interface and supports synchronized audio and video, touchscreen input, and input devices for people with disabilities. Despite all its capabilities, Pvote is just 460 lines of Python code; thus, it directly addresses the conflict between flexibility and reliability that underlies much of the current controversy over electronic voting.']

Occasionally I implement an algorithm recursively then hit the recursion limit in Python.
For example, I just wrote this:

def clique(self, node, done=None): 
    if done is None: 
        done = set() 
    done.add(node) 
    for other_node in self.edges_by_node[node]: 
        if other_node not in done: 
            self.clique(other_node, done) 
    return done 

which hits a limit if the graph is too big.
So I rewrote it like this:

 
def clique(self, start_node): 
    done = set() 
    to_do = [start_node] 
    while to_do: 
        node = to_do.pop() 
        done.add(node) 
        for other_node in self.edges_by_node[node]: 
            if other_node not in done: 
                to_do.append(other_node) 
    return done 

There's a simple relationship between the two, quite independent of the specific task at hand. Which got me thinking about abstracting the specific task out of the recursive versus non-recursive pattern.
I guess I was having an SICP moment :-)

Did you know that you can have your city's Mayor proclaim a day to celebrate computer science education?

This is exactly what CSTA Board member Brian Scarbeau did! And the city of Orlando, FL Mayor Buddy Dyer proudly proclaimed December 7th as Computer Science Education Celebration Day.

Brian picked December 7th in honor of the birthday of Grace Murray Hopper, in this way celebrating both the contribution of computer science education to the modern world and the contribution of women to computer science.
According to Brian, it is very easy to have a day proclaimed. You simply go to:

and scroll down to Download a Proclamation link and print that out and send it to your Mayor at least two months before the event to give them time to sign it and send it back to you.
