read, write and modify MARC bibliographic data
The pymarc module provides an API for reading, writing and modifying MARC records from python. MARC (MAchine Readable Cataloging) is a metadata format for bibliographic data.

MARC was developed in the late 1960s at the Library of Congress to enable libraries to share bibliographic metadata. In these days of XML the MARC21 transmission format looks quite antiquated, since it was designed for reading bytes from a tape: there is a record leader that defines how long the record is, a directory for mapping the offsets for each field in the record, and the field data itself.
